School children had their first swing on the brand-new Sheppey themed adventure golf course they helped design.

Scorpions, a clock tower and a well-known seal tested the young golfers' skills during a tee-off event for the Sheerness Shipwreck Adventure Golf, on 18 July in Beachfields.

A large replica of the SS Montgomery is the centrepiece of the exciting new course, which features 18 holes celebrating the unique heritage and landmarks of the Island.

Local people and school children contributed to the design of the 18-hole adventure golf course which has been installed alongside the soon-to-be extended and improved leisure centre, part of Swale Borough Council’s Sheerness Revival project.

Community feedback led to some brilliant changes from the council’s initial concepts.

Following a popular suggestion, a planned whale feature became "Sammy the Seal" – a tribute to the friendly seal who became a familiar sight around the Island.

Another suggestion, from a pupil at Rose Street Primary School, has led to the swapping of a lighthouse design for a model of the historic High Street clock tower.

Students from EKC Secondary School proposed scorpion obstacles along with representation of the Blue Town wall for one hole – their tails provide a fun challenge at the end of the course!

Local input also inspired the design of the service hut, which will now resemble the iconic beach huts lining Sheppey's coastline.

Anyone looking for a fun activity for all the family will be able to putt their way through Sheppey’s unique identity with holes featuring:

  • Hole 1 ship bollards
  • Hole 2 an elevated wave and Sammy the Seal sat on a rock
  • Hole 3 a ship funnel
  • Hole 4 the Sheerness Clock Tower
  • Hole 5 torpedoes and artillery shells
  • Hole 6 the bow of the SS Montgomery with its masts
  • Hole 7 a pterodactyl
  • Hole 8 a whirlpool
  • Hole 9 shipping compass
  • Hole 10 a ships wheel
  • Hole 11 fossil ammonite
  • Hole 12 an anchor
  • Hole 13 bridges
  • Hole 14 the stern of the SS Montgomery sticking out the water
  • Hole 15 the Minster Abbey Gatehouse
  • Hole 16 a buoy
  • Hole 17 a Wright plane, highlighting the early aviation history on the island
  • Hole 18 scorpion tales and a representation of the wall in Blue Town

Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of the Economy and Property Committee, said:

“The tee off event was a massive success, it was amazing to see the children enjoying the course they helped design.

“This is going to be a great asset on the Island, helping boost tourism and giving our residents something fun to do with the family.

“The heritage theme helps remind us of Sheppey’s diverse and rich history, and the golf will help recement Beachfields as a leisure destination.

“We can’t wait to see everyone have a swing on this new course; it is quite difficult so why not challenge your friends and family to see who does best!

“Sheerness Revival is so much more than just the leisure element, we are also modernising the GP facilities, helping Sheppey Matters, improving the gym, extending the college and helping young entrepreneurs at Masters House with new workspaces.”

This new adventure golf course is expected to open fully to the public on 23July and will revive a legacy at Beachfields, which has been a destination for leisure since the 1840’s and even hosted a previous course.

It forms just one part of the major improvements planned for the Beachfields site under the government funded Sheerness Revival project.

This wider regeneration includes modernising and expanding the GP practice, renovating the gym, creating a dedicated space for local charity Sheppey Matters, and installing exciting Adventure Play and Tag Active facilities.

The council also plans to add a new café, a free outdoor gym, a MUGA, and to renovate the tennis court and improve accessibility throughout the public space.

This project brings back adventure golf to Beachfields, enhancing the leisure facilities available for residents and visitors, celebrating the Isle of Sheppey, and contributing to a revitalised Sheerness.
