Beach lovers can now enjoy 14 brand-new huts in Leysdown as Swale Borough Council completes the latest stage of its coastal project.

The council is also building 12 more huts at Minster Leas, adding to the iconic row of35 huts already popular in Minster and 20 in Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey.

With nearly 200 people on the waiting list, these new additions will provide additional huts for those who wish to have a base on the beach.

The new huts are part of the council’s plans to make it easier for everyone to enjoy the coast by offering a range of flexible options:

  • buy a hut and pay an annual ground rent while handling your own maintenance
  • long and short-term rentals for those who want a hut for a season or a specific period of time
  • a new weekly rental option to make beach huts affordable and accessible for families and visitors on holiday

The project isn't just for individuals. A new community hut is coming to Minster, following the success of the community hut in Leysdown.

This space will be available for local groups to host events and activities right by the sea.

Once these projects are finished, the council will potentially look into installing even more huts at Minster Leas. The council will talk to local residents and partners before any further work begins.

Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of the council’s Economy and Property Committee, said:

“We know how much people love our coast, and our growing waiting list, of more than 180 people, shows just how popular these beach huts are.

“We want as many people as possible to have the chance to enjoy them. By offering new ways to own or rent, including our new weekly rentals, we are making the seaside more accessible for everyone.

“These new huts are a fantastic addition to our beaches, and we look forward to seeing residents and visitors making the most of them this summer.”
