Get ready to get active for free in Sheerness thanks to Swale Borough Council’s £20 million government funded regeneration project.

A refurbished tennis court, multi-use games area, outdoor gym and a children’s bicycle track will be installed near the Healthy Living Centre in Beachfields, giving locals extra ways to get active.

The tennis court will be refurbished allowing people of all ages and levels to give tennis a swing.

A multi-use games area will provide the people of Sheerness a place to play with their friends or practice their basketball and football skills, thanks to built-in hoops and goals.

The outdoor gym, which will feature a circuit of gym equipment, will give people the opportunity to workout and keep fit for free while in the fresh air.

The area around the paddling pool will be expanded providing more space for seating, picnic tables and making it a more pleasant place to relax while your children play.

This includes toilets, accessed from within the fenced area, and a serving hatch to the new café facilities in the leisure centre.

Works have already begun to improve the surrounding area, which will see the sculpture made complete and returned to a soon-to-be revamped area, alongside new pathways.

Opening up the space will allow a better connection between the train station, high street and the sea front, helping make Sheerness Beach a destination once again.

The ambitious plan for the centre also includes modernising and improving the health facilities, and enhancing the leisure facilities, including a new adventure play area for toddlers.

Sheppey Matters, an award-winning health and well-being charity will have a purpose-built space to help them continue providing their valuable and important services to locals.

While a new adventure golf course – based on Sheppey’s history – has already opened attracting thousands of people to Sheerness.

Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of the council’s Economy and Property Committee, said:

“Sheerness Revival is about uplifting the area on many fronts - health, education employment and leisure – helping to improve the lives of our residents in a meaningful way.

“We are also very conscious of balancing the paid-for experiences, like the exciting adventure play, adventure golf and gym facilities, with free activities.

“That is why we are investing in a muga, tennis court, outdoor gym and our paddling pool – adding to the existing popular pirate themed play area and sand pit.”

The project in Beachfields is a key component of the council's £20 million Sheerness Revival programme which aims to improve the health and wellbeing, education and leisure facilities on the Island and create new employment and training opportunities for local people.

The other elements of Sheerness Revival include the expansion of Sheppey College, which is nearly complete, and the creation of workshop spaces at the rear of Masters House which have now been completed.
