Give Swale Borough Council’s refurbished courts a try, no matter your ability, at free walking tennis sessions in Sittingbourne.
Sittingbourne Tennis Club, with funding from Kent Tennis, will be hosting six free coached tennis sessions which are perfect for anyone who wants to give the sport a try, but at their own pace.
Walking tennis requires no running or jumping, and you can let the ball bounce twice giving you more time to get to the ball.
The sessions, which take place each Monday, can help people who are less mobile build confidence and get active and are great for people returning from injury.
The next session will be on Monday 2 February at Milton Recreation Ground, Vicarage Road, Sittingbourne, ME10 2AU, and will run from 11am to 12pm.
This follows the council’s refurbishment works to the park tennis courts at Milton Recreation Ground and King George Playing Fields.
The improvements were made possible thanks to a partnership between the council and the LTA’s Park Tennis Project, and government funding.
Seven courts across the two parks were fully refurbished and the dated facilities resurfaced and repainted with new fencing, and nets installed.
Fences and gate access technology were installed to make it easier for players to find, book and get on the courts, whilst helping maintain their new high standards for future generations.
You can find out more and book your spot for the walking tennis sessions here.
Cllr Hannah Perkin, chair of the Housing, Health and Communities Committee, said:
“It is fantastic to see these refurbished tennis courts continuing to be a real asset for our communities, providing ways for anyone to get active and socialise.
“We have supported the tennis club’s successful free LTA tennis sessions, their amazing open day events, and are now thrilled with this new, inclusive, initiative.
“They have helped make these recently renovated tennis courts accessible to everyone no matter your ability, for free, and we can’t wait to see even more people enjoying these courts going forward.
“Please book onto these new walking tennis sessions, they are a great opportunity to give tennis a swing in a relaxed environment - without needing to run or jump - with the guidance of a coach.”
If you are looking to book the court for yourself - players can buy season tickets allowing daily access to the courts for £40 per year and casual users can book a court for £6 per hour.
The funds raised make sure the courts can be kept at the new high standard for years to come.
