Celebrate national tree week with events being hosted and supported by Swale Borough Council across the borough.
National Tree Week is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration and runs from 22 November until 1 December this year.
This year’s events in the borough include tree giveaways, litter picking, and tree guard removal offering opportunities to celebrate and promote trees and to discover their value in all our lives.
You can get a free tree sapling, on a first come first served basis, at markets across the borough - there will be birches, hazel, rowan, hawthorn, oak, wild cherry, and blackthorn trees available.
Volunteers can also help collect and remove thousands of outgrown tree covers from a community woodland in Minster.
CDDL Recycling will once again be providing the tonne bags needed to collect the guards and are removing and recycling the covers for free.
The council’s events for tree week this year, across the borough, are:
- Tuesday 25 November, tree giveaway from 9:15 onwards at the Sheerness Market, Rose Street Car Park, Sheerness on Sea, Isle of Sheppey, Kent
- Thursday 27 November, removing plastic tree guards and litter picking at Thistle Hill Community Woodland between 9:30am to 1pm, Minster on Sea, Sheerness ME12 3GP.
- Friday 28 November, tree giveaway at the Faversham Markets - Faversham Town Council and tree wardens have received trees to give away from the council.

During the council’s separate tree planting week, Monday 8 December to Friday 12 December, volunteers will be planting whips - young trees - helping boost Swale’s local ecosystems and add important greenery to our borough.
The events taking place in December are between 9am to 1pm on:

Cllr Dolley Wooster, chair of the Environmental Services and Climate Change Committee, said:
“Tree week is an amazing opportunity to get out into nature, socialise with like-minded people, and take a moment to appreciate our natural environment.
“This year we have decided to give away saplings to enable our residents to spread trees and greenery across the borough, pick up your free saplings at one of our major markets across the borough.
“There is also a woodland clean-up taking place at the Thistle Hill Woodland, help us remove tree guards and litter pick so we can keep our beautiful woodland pristine and a wonderful place to visit.
“We are planning even more tree planting days this December during our tree planting week, but we need your help to make a positive impact to our planet, so please volunteer!”
All events are subject to the weather, the council will announce any changes on their Facebook page and website.
