Overnight parking charges will soon be coming to Shingle Bank and Shellness to resolve persistent parking issues.

Swale Borough Council’s Community and Leisure and Policy and Resources Committee agreed to introduce overnight charges for all vehicles at both sites, to tackle the negative impact of overnight and long-term parking.

The charges will start on 1 August and will need to be paid via RingGo when parking between 8pm to 8am, with the fee to be agreed at full council on 30 July.

The plans to introduce overnight parking charges for all vehicles at both locations was the most supported option among more than 1,200 residents who responded to a public consultation.

The council has also installed CCTV at the Shingle Bank, is repairing the entrance surface at Shingle Bank, has implemented traffic orders, and is funding additional enforcement and adding signage.

Swale Borough Council began looking into these solutions after receiving numerous complaints from residents on persistent problems with litter and anti-social behaviour.

Previous measures, such as width restrictions at Shingle Bank and bollards at Shellness, have helped reduce vehicle numbers, but problems have persisted.

Vandalism, including the removal of metal posts reinforcing the width restrictions, has also been a challenge.

The council’s officers have conducted welfare checks and have put together support packages for those impacted by these changes.

Cllr Elliott Jayes, vice chair of the Environmental Services and Climate Change Committee, said:

“After receiving a number of complaints from residents, we worked hard to find a solution to your concerns that would lead to the least disruption for those wanting to enjoy our beautiful beaches.

“We asked you what you would prefer we did and have now put into action your preferred option; overnight charges for all vehicles at both Shellness and Shingle Bank.

“We are working closely with the people who may be displaced by these changes, and our housing options team are ready and waiting to offer tailored and compassionate support.”
