Power up your tennis game, meet people and get active with the new local tennis leagues coming to Swale.

Swale Borough Council have teamed up with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to introduce Barclays Local Tennis Leagues.

You can take part in fun competitive tennis leagues, whatever your level, on the courts at the Milton Recreation Ground and King George Playing Fields in Sittingbourne from 3 April 2025.

The leagues will allow you to improve your skills, find a host of new people to play tennis with and win coupons throughout the year, whilst competing against others at your level.

Interested players - over the age of 18 - need to download the Local Tennis Leagues App and sign up by 31 March to be entered into the first round of 2025.

This new competition adds to the over 200 mixed singles and doubles leagues taking place at local parks and public courts across the nation all year round.

The council and the LTA have also recently launched Free Park Tennis sessions for people who want to give tennis a go for free, taking place on the first Sunday of every month under the guidance of a qualified trainer.

The league and free sessions are being rolled out after extensive refurbishment works to the park tennis courts at Milton Recreation Ground and King George Playing Fields in Sittingbourne.

These were delivered by the LTA’s Park Tennis Project and saw seven courts across the two parks being refurbished and the dated facilities resurfaced and repainted with new fencing, nets and gate access technology installed.

The works were paid for by a £124,578.54 investment by the UK government and LTA Tennis Foundation, and an additional injection of £32,413 from the council.

The investment forms part of the LTA’s Park Tennis Project, which is transforming thousands of tennis courts across Great Britain for the benefit of local communities, as part of a £30million investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation.

Cllr Elliott Jayes, vice chair of the Community and Leisure Committee, said:

“The LTA and the council have invested a lot of time and money into getting these courts to a fantastic standard, which allows us to host community events like the free tennis sessions and leagues.

“Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player looking for a challenge there is a league for you, so if you are interested please sign up.

“This is a great opportunity for people living in Swale to meet new people to play tennis with, exercise and practice your tennis skills against opponents at your level.

“The income from regular bookings and these leagues helps us maintain the courts to their new high standard and fund the free sessions, making tennis more accessible to our residents.

“We hope kickstarting these initiatives will give our residents the opportunities to pick up a racket and give tennis a go, ultimately growing the sport in Swale.”
