Swale Borough Council has teamed up with Diversity House to sell £10 bikes, refurbished through the Swale Cycle-re-Cycle scheme.
People can purchase a refurbished bicycle - on a first come first served basis - from 3pm on 25 March from the local charity Diversity House, Church St, Sittingbourne, ME10 3EG.
HMP Swaleside inmates refurbish unwanted bikes giving them the opportunity to upskill themselves and make a positive step towards rehabilitation - whilst saving bikes from the tip.
The scheme also provides Swale residents with affordable, environmentally friendly transportation, that helps them keep active and healthy.
More than 300 bikes have been refurbished and sold on through local community groups for just £10 each, making the scheme self-funding and sustainable.
The council funded the initial supply of bike parts and workshop consumables, while Canterbury Bike Project trained an instructor to deliver the City & Guilds qualification at the prison.
If you have a roadworthy bike or scooter you’d like to donate, drop it off at the donation point at the Sheerness or Faversham Household Waste Recycling Centres, along with any new or good condition used parts.
Diversity House is a local charity aiming to tackle social inequalities through education, training, advice, and assistance.

Cllr Dolley Wooster, chair of the Environmental Services and Climate Change Committee, said:
“The Cycle-re-Cycle scheme is an amazing project which contributes to the health and well-being of our residents while also helping our prisoners with their rehabilitation.
“Partnering with our local charities, such as Diversity House, is a great way to make sure the bikes get saved from the tip or people’s sheds and are distributed back into our community.
“We ask that anyone who is interested in a bike is respectful to staff and volunteers, there is limited stock but if you don’t get one this time, we will be doing many more sale days in the future.
“The project is now accepting non-electric scooters. If your kids have outgrown one, please consider donating it to the scheme at one of the drop-off points so we can start offering those at our sale days too.”
There is limited stock, and the bicycles are sold on a first come first served basis.
Please do not arrive more than 20 minutes before the event starts.
Rude or aggressive behaviour towards staff, volunteers, or other members of the public will not be tolerated and anyone acting in this way will be asked to leave.
