Leisure centres, green spaces and community infrastructure will be getting a £1.5m boost in Swale.

Swale Borough Council’s Policy and Resources Committee has agreed to allocate the funding, from the Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund, to projects that benefit local people across the borough.

The programme includes improvements to Faversham’s open spaces, creating a changing village at the Faversham Pool, and works to improve well used footpaths in Faversham.

Sittingbourne town centre will also be enhanced with improvements to open spaces and toilets with funding also set aside to improve Stones Farm Countryside Gap, a new greenspace recently acquired by the Council.

King George V Playing Field will also benefit from the investment with the improvements to the pavilion to support ongoing community use.

Funding has also been earmarked to invest further into Beachfields, building on the investment being made as part of the government funded Sheerness Revival project.

This includes improvements to the popular paddling pool area.

The council’s CCTV service will also benefit from investment thanks to the funding.

Cllr Tim Gibson, chair of the Policy and Resources Committee, said:

“We have put a lot of thought and effort into planning where to invest this money, to make meaningful improvements to locations across the borough.

“This includes improvements to our green spaces, including the newly acquired stones farm countryside gap, further improvements to Sheerness, investments into Faversham Pool and work to revitalise Sittingbourne Town Centre.

“Of course, we would have loved to be able to do even more but, without additional funding, we need to make considered choices with what we have.

Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of the Economy and Property Committee, said:

“We are always working to improve the borough for local people, and we want to make sure we get as much value from this funding as possible.

“We can’t wait to bring our projects forward, because we believe they will bring tangible positive changes for our communities.”
