The Sheerness Revival project has celebrated another major milestone.
The council is revamping and expanding the centre in Beachfields as part of the £20 million Sheerness Revival project, funded by the UK Government.
Councillors and partners in the project attended a special ceremony to mark the completion of the outside structure, meaning the building is now fully sealed from the weather.
Construction teams have installed the extension’s cladding, brickwork, and windows.
With the scaffolding coming down, residents can finally see the new building taking shape.
The event gave the council a chance to thank the construction team for their hard work as the builders turn the community's ambitious plans into a reality.
Now that work to the outside is complete the construction company, Etec Group, will focus on fitting out the inside of the building ready for opening later this year.
Once the wiring, heating, and other fittings are installed, the new gym will be installed, along with upgraded health facilities, new café, adventure play area, and a dedicated space for the local charity Sheppey Matters.
The project will also bring a free outdoor gym, a multi-use games area, and a children’s bicycle track to Beachfields. The team will fully refurbish the existing tennis court and paddling pool.
New paths and clear signs will make the whole area easier to reach and more welcoming for both residents and visitors.
Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of the council’s economy and property committee, said:
"It was fantastic to walk around the building and see the different areas taking shape. These spaces will benefit our communities for years to come.
"You can really picture the new leisure facilities, the gym, the café overlooking the updated paddling pool, the health services, and the space for Sheppey Matters.
"This ceremony marks a key milestone for the project and lets us recognise the hard work of everyone who has helped us reach this point.
"We have already finished two of the three Sheerness Revival projects, and they are already making a real difference for people on the Island.
“EKC Sheppey College has welcomed new students to its high-tech facilities, and three local young entrepreneurs are setting up in the new maker studios at Masters House to grow their businesses.
"We cannot wait to open the doors to Sheerness’s new facility and welcome people in to see to the improvements later this year."
The Beachfields project plays a key part in the council's £20 million investment in Sheerness.
The council wants to improve health, wellbeing, education, and leisure on the Island, while creating new jobs and training for local people.
Other parts of the Sheerness Revival include the recently expanded EKC Sheppey College, which provides new engineering and design courses and space for a junior college.
The council also created the Maker Studios at Masters House, offering spaces for young entrepreneurs to build their businesses with help from the enterprise charity Launch It.
