A temporary entrance is being installed at the Sheppey Leisure Centre so gym-users can carry on working out during improvement works for the Sheerness Revival project.
The new entrance is on the stretch of road to the south of the leisure centre, past Clarence Row, which is being closed to traffic to allow safe access on foot.
Millions of pounds are being invested in the Beachfields site as part of Swale Borough Council’s Sheerness Revival project, funded by the UK Government.
The project will modernise and expand the GP facilities, create a purpose-built space for local charity Sheppey Matters, renovate the gym and add new leisure activities such as Tag Active and soft play.
During the works, the gym has temporarily relocated to the sports hall while the existing gym space is being renovated, and to enable the wider works taking place at Beachfields.
The project will also enhance the surrounding area - with a Sheppey themed adventure golf course, outdoor gym, a touch up to the paddling pool area and by improving the sites accessibility and connectivity.
Sheerness Revival is a £20 million regeneration project, funded by the United Kingdom Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), which is aiming to improve the health, education, leisure and employment opportunities on the Isle of Sheppey.
In addition to the works at Beachfields, the Sheppey College is being extended and the education provision enhanced, while Masters House is getting new makers huts for young entrepreneurs to kick start their businesses from.
Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of Swale Borough Council’s Economy and Property committee, said:
“We are very pleased that our regeneration project is picking up steam, the college expansion is progressing, and Masters House and Beachfields will be breaking ground soon too.
“Our number one priority is to keep people safe while we complete the works bringing improved leisure, health and wellbeing provision to the island.
“As part of this we have decided to close off vehicle access to the road running alongside the tennis court to make sure people can access the temporary entrance to the gym safely.
“We wanted to make sure there was as little disruption as possible, so we have made other temporary arrangements such as relocating the GP to Minster and provided a storefront for Sheppey Matters.
“This project will improve the range of services and opportunities available to residents.”
Temporary changes
The gym will be operating out of the sports hall, with a temporary entrance, reception and changing facility.
The Minster Medical Group’s surgery at the Sheppey Healthy Living Centre has temporarily relocated to their other location, Minster Medical Centre, at the Sheppey Community Hospital.
Patients can continue to access GP services by calling the practice in the normal way via their telephone number 01795 877714, and appointments will take place at the Minster Medical Centre, Plover Road ME12 3LT.
Sheppey Matters is providing their main office operations and drop-in sessions from Sheppey Gateway, and all other services are being provided from their shop at 31 Broadway, Sheerness, ME12 1AB.
The paddling pool area alongside the leisure centre has also been closed temporarily to allow for a much-needed face-lift and for the other works at the site to be completed.
