Roads to be deep cleaned

Local roads will be getting some extra attention as Swale Borough Council’s deep clean programme gets back underway.

Deep cleans take place on roads where access for the regular cleaning is difficult due to obstacles like parked cars.

Local feedback and council data is used to identify streets where residents are asked to move parked cars for a few hours. This allows crews access the whole road so they can remove litter and weeds they can’t normally get to.

A regular schedule for roads to be cleaned has been drawn up which focusses on different parts of the borough every Thursday.

The next street cleaning will take place at Tonge Road in Sittingbourne from 10:00 to 12:00 on 9 January 2025, followed by Luton Road and Minster Road next week in Faversham, and Clyde Street in Sheerness the following week.

As well as the deep cleans, the council’s street cleansing contractor has been carrying out some intensive clean ups in areas that need them the most, to make the regular, routine cleaning easier.

Cllr Rich Lehmann, chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee at the council, said:

“Deep cleans are a way of tackling the dirt and debris that we can’t reach when we’re carrying out our usual street cleans due to parked cars, so we really need people to make sure they move their cars for a few hours when we’re in the area.

“We’ll have signs up in advance so people know what to expect, and we hope they’ll notice a real difference when we’re done.

“We plan to carry out a deep clean every week and will be moving around the borough to make sure as many people as possible see the benefits.

“Our officers are working to identify roads that need a bit more TLC, but we'd welcome suggestions for places that might benefit from a more thorough clean up.”
