Opt out of Halloween

People who don’t want to take part in Halloween activities this year can let others know thanks to a poster designed by Swale Borough Council.

Whilst some people enjoy Halloween, it’s not for everyone, as not everyone feels safe opening the door to strangers in the dark.

People may be vulnerable, have religious reasons not to take part, or not have the disposable income for decorations and sweets.

The council are once again working with Kent police, Kent Neighbourhood Watch and Kent Fire and Rescue Service to share a poster that households can use to show they do not want any trick or treaters to visit them this Halloween.

It is easy to use - simply download and print out the poster and put it up in a visible location, such as the door or window of your home.

Parents should make sure their children know that if they see this poster, they should leave the house and respect the household’s wishes.

To avoid any antisocial behaviour, parents should also make sure children don't take flour or eggs out with them when trick or treating.

Cllr Hannah Perkin, chair of the Community Committee, said:

“These posters work best when everyone respects the wishes of those who would rather sit out this Halloween.

“It doesn’t matter what reasons they have, either health risks, religious reasons, financial hardships, or just general safety, we need to work together to make sure everyone has a good night.

“People usually don’t decorate their homes and keep their lights off to indicate they don’t want anyone at their door, having the poster gives a clear indication, in writing, that there won’t be any sweets to be had.

“Behaviour like throwing eggs and flour really does ruin the night for everyone, so please be respectful and stay safe.

“If you are taking part this year, please be mindful that some people are sitting out and, most importantly, have responsible fun!”

If you witness antisocial behaviour, call 101 or report it on the Kent police website: https://www.kent.police.uk/
