A conservation area near Lynsted and Teynham has been extended to protect more of the area’s important history.
Swale Borough Council has been reviewing the existing conservation area of Cellar Hill and Greenstreet as part of their commitment to deliver their adopted heritage strategy.
A public consultation asked local people what mattered most to them, and this feedback helped decide what areas to include in the conservation area.
This vital local knowledge helped guide the inclusion of the area to the west of the conservation area to include London Road and to the north to include Station Road.
Cellar Hill and Greenstreet Conservation Areas run parallel to the old Roman Watling Street and during the 18th and 19th centuries it provided rest and refreshment for people travelling to and from London.
The council's character appraisal and management plans for conservation areas are used to inform planning decisions, planning policy making and proposals that enhance or regenerate the conservation area.
Cllr Mike Baldock, Swale Borough Council’s Heritage Champion, said:
“Cellar Hill and Greenstreet, like many places across our wonderful borough, holds glimpses into our past, with the area being shaped by ancient Roman roads.
“Later the area became home to the workers of the nearby thriving brick-making industry, and the evidence of this expansion during industrialisation can still be seen today.
"Our conservation area and management plans are key to helping us protect this important history and heritage and puts special protection in place.
“Thank you to everyone who helped inform our decision to expand the area, we are fully committed to not only preserving our history, but also actively promoting the enhancement of these important areas.”
