You can find out about the history and heritage of Sheerness and Blue Town thanks to a new walking route.

We awarded Sheerness Town Council £10,000 from its government funded Town Centre Action Grant (TAG) to create an interactive heritage walk from The Old Courthouse ending at the SS Montgomery.

The route, named Sheerness and Blue Town Heritage Walk, highlights things like the Dockyard Church, Criterion Theatre, Rose Street Cottage and aims to bring in more people to the high street and support local businesses.

People can read about the historical importance of each marked stop as they travel through the town on their own steam.

The grant funded the development and creation of the route, way finding, the design and printing of leaflets and the building of a website.

There was also an opening event where local school children got to experience the walk for the first time, learning about the rich history of their area.

Now that the walk is open, the town council hopes people will get out of their cars, stay local and support the high street, while enjoying a healthy, free and accessible activity.

Cllr Dolley Wooster, chair of the Sheerness Town Council, said:

“Sheerness Town Council are very pleased to be working with Swale Borough Council in providing a new attraction for Sheerness residents and visitors to enjoy.

“The walk spans the entire town and has a lovely seaside walk included.  We hope you enjoy your time in Sheerness and make great use of the other really special elements of the town including Swales new adventure golf and the historic high street.

“Sheerness is full of small business and organisations that add to the unique offer in Sheerness. We have an excellent train service that means that everything you need for a great day out is in walking distance.”

The Town Centre Action Grants scheme has received funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
