Sheppey East will benefit from up to £20 million investment over the next ten years to support local renewal projects.
The funding comes from the Government’s Pride in Place Programme - a £5 billion national programme designed to empower local communities and provides funds to revive high streets and town centres.
Sheppey East is one of 169 areas across the UK to be selected for this long-term funding, which will provide up to £2 million annually for a decade.
The funding is intended to be used for projects that local people want to see, such as creating new green spaces, improving public areas, and boosting local businesses.
As well as this long-term investment, Swale will also receive an immediate share of £150 million in capital funding. This can be used to kick-start projects to upgrade public spaces.
The key principle of the funding is that local people will have a direct say in how the money is spent.
Swale Borough Council will be working closely with residents and community groups to identify the priorities for investment and develop projects that will make a real difference to the lives of people in the borough.
Councillor Tim Gibson, Leader of Swale Borough Council, said:
"This is fantastic news that gives us a golden opportunity to deliver real, positive change for our communities.
“We’ve already shown the community impact we can deliver with the Government-funded Sheerness Revival project well underway, and the success of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund benefitting communities all across the borough.
“We are committed to making sure that this funding is used to support projects that will make a real difference to local people.
“We’ll be finding out more about the programme in the coming weeks, and we’ll be thinking about how we can make sure local people are at the heart of how this money is invested in their communities."
To make sure the funding decisions are driven by the community, a new Neighbourhood Board will be established by next summer.
This board will bring together residents, local business owners, and community leaders to develop a shared vision and oversee the allocation of the funding and will have to submit an expenditure plan to government by winter 2026/27.
