This event has been cancelled.
Give the gift of outdoor fun this Christmas with a refurbished bicycle from Swale Borough Council’s Cycle-re-Cycle scheme.
The council have teamed up with local charity Children & Families to provide people with refurbished bikes for just £10.
There are 40 refurbished bicycles available, 25 children’s bikes and 15 adult’s bikes on a first come first served basis, from 10 am to 12 pm on Saturday 14 December at the Seashells Children's Centre in Sheerness.
Children & Families will also be providing a free helmet with each purchase to help keep users safe while cycling.
More than 100 bikes have already been refurbished and have been sold for just £10 through local community groups, making the scheme self-funding and sustainable.
HMP Swaleside inmates refurbish the unwanted bikes whilst working towards a City & Guilds in Bike Mechanics qualification, provided by the Canterbury Bike Project. This gives them the opportunity to upskill themselves and make a positive step toward rehabilitation.
The scheme also aims to provide Swale residents with affordable, environmentally friendly transportation, that helps them keep active and healthy.
The council funded the initial supply of bike parts and workshop consumables, while Canterbury Bike Project trained an instructor to deliver the City & Guilds qualification at the prison.
If you have a roadworthy bike – two wheels and two brakes - you’d like to donate, drop it off at the donation point at the Sheerness Household Waste Recycling Centre, along with new or good condition used parts.
Cllr Rich Lehmann, chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, said:
“Our cycle-re-cycle scheme is offering a great opportunity to get an affordable bike, whether for yourself so you can get active with an environmentally friendly transportation method, or to get a great gift for a loved one.
“Children & Families are a fantastic resource for our residents and we are happy to support them however we can, and we are excited to get them involved in this scheme.
“Every event we have done so far has been a major success, with hundreds of bikes already being donated, refurbished and then distributed back into the community - it is clear that people are really buying into everything our scheme is trying to achieve.
“Thank you to all of the people who have donated bikes, the charities we have partnered with to help distribute them, and our cycle-re-cycle scheme partners Swaleside HMP and Canterbury Bike Project.”
Ian Townsend-Blazier, Children & Families, said:
“Being able to host the cycle-re-cycle scheme at Seashells Children & Families Centre is a great opportunity for our local community, we are thankful to Swale Borough Council and the wider partners Swaleside HMP and Canterbury Bike Project for the amazing work they do in upcycling the bikes.
“On Saturday we will be offering 25 children’s bikes and 15 adult’s bikes for an amazing price! These bikes will make an excellent Christmas present, as well as support anyone looking for a bike.
“With the Support of Sheerness Town Council, Seashells has secured funding to be able to provide a free bike helmet with each bike to help keep all bike users safe whilst cycling, so for the price of £10 you can get a good quality recycled bike and a brand-new bike helmet!”
The cycle-re-cycle scheme is taking place alongside Family & Children’s Family Christmas event – The Snowman.
Hundreds of local families have already booked on, with free activities, art and crafts, meeting Santa with a free gift, and so much more.
