Get a £10 bicycle and have family fun at an event promoting walking, cycling and wheeling in Faversham next month.

Swale Borough Council’s Swale Cycle-re-Cycle will be selling affordable bikes at Faversham Town Council’s active travel day at the Faversham Rec on Sunday 1 June 2025.

The council’s scheme sees HMP Swaleside inmates refurbish unwanted bicycles - upskilling themselves and taking a positive step towards rehabilitation - whilst saving bikes from the tip.

Whilst also providing Swale residents with affordable, environmentally friendly transportation, that helps them keep active and healthy.

Three hundred bikes have already been refurbished and sold on through local community groups for just £10 each, making the scheme self-funding and sustainable.

In addition to the sale, Faversham Town Council’s community day will allow you to join in on family fun - like the Faversham family bike ride - enjoy entertainment, demonstrations and a wellness zone.

You can also get free bike checks and repairs thanks to Cycle Maintenance UK, get information on guided walks around Faversham - including the best routes to explore, and enjoy food and drink.

Cllr Rich Lehmann, chair of Swale Borough Council’s, Environment and Climate Change committee, said:

“Faversham Town Council’s active travel day is the perfect place for the Cycle-re-Cycle scheme to provide affordable bikes to the public.

“The event aligns perfectly with our schemes aims - making cycling more accessible, promoting active travel and more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

“If you don’t have a bike but want to take part in the family bike ride or just want to start getting healthy by cycling you can pick up a bike for just £10 and get cycling!

“Of course there are a limited number of bikes available, but the scheme isn’t going anywhere and there will be more opportunities this year to get a bike.

“Please come down to the event and support our initiative, we want to help prisoners with their rehabilitation journey and help the residents of Swale access affordable bikes.”

The council funded the initial supply of bike parts and workshop consumables, while Canterbury Bike Project trained an instructor to deliver the City & Guilds qualification at the prison.

If you have a roadworthy bike – two wheels and two brakes - you’d like to donate, drop it off at the Sheerness Household Waste Recycling centre donation point, along with new or good condition used parts.

Looking to grow the operation, the council will soon be opening new donation points for people to drop-off their unwanted bicycles, making donating to the scheme more accessible across the borough.
