People can now have their say on the Cellar Hill and Greenstreet Conservation Area.
Swale Borough Council has reviewed the existing conservation area of Cellar Hill and Greenstreet as part of their commitment to deliver the adopted Heritage Strategy 2020, Action Plan 1.
Cellar Hill and Greenstreet Conservation Areas run parallel to the old Roman Watling Street and during the 18th and 19th centuries it provided rest and refreshment for the travellers.
Consultations are now open on the draft character appraisal and management plan of the conservation area and will be used to inform planning decisions, planning policy making and proposals that enhance or regenerate the conservation area.
Cllr Mike Baldock, Chair of the Planning Committee, said:
"Swale is home to many historic towns which boast an eclectic mix of ancient and more modern architecture, whilst being surrounded by astounding natural beauty.
“Cellar Hill and Greenstreet owes its shape to the Roman road builders who carved a path towards London, with the village later offering rest and refreshments for people making the trip from Dover.
“Following its urbanisation, the village served as a home for people working in the surrounding, thriving brick-making industry – providing a unique mix of architecture.
“We have been reviewing all of Swale’s conservation areas to make sure they have been effective in protecting our cherished heritage, and creating plans to keep them safe for years to come.
“As part of this, we have made a draft management plan for Cellar Hill and Greenstreet to guide sustainable and responsible development and regeneration in the area.
“We need to protect these heritage rich areas for future generations to enjoy and to keep them safe from poor quality alterations and developments.
“We are looking for locals’ views on how we maintain and manage the conservation area, so please read through our plans and have your say.”
The consultation begins today (24 July) and will end on Wednesday 18 September 2024.

Hard copies of the draft Cellar Hill & Greenstreet character appraisal and management plan will be available to view at the Teynham Library from Wednesday 24 July onwards.
