Your new waste service

Did you know that your waste service is changing? Last year we signed our new waste and recycling contract with SUEZ.

This means that from Monday 25 March 2024 things will be a little different.

We’ve worked hard to set up this new contract, taking into account changes to government legislation and also your views about how you want your recycling and waste collected.

We have also tried to make sure the bin collection and street cleansing services are delivered in the most cost-effective, and environmentally sensitive, ways we can.

Ch-ch-changes

So what changes can you expect to see, and what is staying the same?

Day changes

We’ve been working hard with our contractors to plan the most efficient, effective and reliable routes and collection rounds.

This means that there are likely to be changes to your collection days. We tried to keep bin collection days the same, but this wasn't possible for everyone.

We’ll be writing to everyone to let you know what your collection dates will be from 24 March 2024.

The letter will let you know if there are any changes to your recycling, food waste, general waste or garden waste collection services, and will confirm what days your bins will be collected.

Make sure you keep an eye out for your letter - we're sending these from mid-February to mid-March.

You’ll also be able to check your collection day nearer the time online using our bin day look up tool.

We'll still be collecting on the scheduled days over the Easter bank holiday weekend. If your collection day is Good Friday or Easter Monday, we will be still be collecting your bins.

Bins out early

All bins need to be out for collection by 6am on the day we're due to pick them up. This gives us more time to get all the bins on the round, and means in summer, the crews aren't out in the heat as much.

Textiles, batteries and small electrical items

We have previously offered a kerbside collection for textiles, batteries and small electrical items.

These were essentially extra storage attached to the lorries that didn't take much waste, and once full it meant no more could be collected.

As these items are widely recycled elsewhere, we'll no longer be collecting them as part of your kerbsite collections.

Contamination

Incorrect items being put into recycling bins is costing us thousands of pounds, and means tonnes of waste is being sent for incineration instead of being recycled.

To stop this, we won't be collecting waste that is contaminated. Please take a look at the information on our contamination page that explains how you can make sure your bin isn't refused.

Clinical waste

If you've got a clinical waste collection, like a sharps box or a clinical bag, there's will be no changes to your existing collection days.

Assisted collections

If you've got an assisted collection, this will carry on with the new contract even, if your collection day has changed.
